The international artists featured in this growing collection include painters, sculptors and muralists born in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Seven of the photographs were signed by the artists, four of which were personally addressed to Mrs. Adelaide Frick (wife of Henry Clay Frick).

Scope and Content Note

The Images of Artists Collection contains cabinet cards, postcards, photographs, prints on paper (engraving, lithograph, photogravure), and some textual material. The bulk of the images are photographic. The images are of artists born in the 1800s and 1900s, with the exceptions of Correggio (b. circa 1489), Hendrik Goltzius (b. 1558), and Samuel Finley Breese Morse (b. 1791). The images include artists shown in formal portraits, at work in their studios, at ceremonies, posing with their artwork, and with colleagues, family and friends. While some images contain annotations, many are undated. The collection also includes some images of artists' studios or artwork that do not depict the artists.

Of particular interest are seven images that were signed by the artists, including a photograph of Aubrey Beardsley; cabinet card portraits of Jozef Israëls and Félix François Georges Philibert Ziem; and four cabinet card portraits signed and addressed to Mrs. Henry Clay Frick by artists B.J. Blommers, Jozef Israëls, Jacob Maris, and Willem Hendrik Mesdag. Also of interest is a signed pencil drawing of a male face by De Hirsh Margules (1964). This collection also includes thirteen photographs of artists of the Royal Academy, each accompanied by a biographical sketch of the featured artist.
