The Center will foster academic and public awareness of the significance of art collecting to American cultural and social history through symposia, conferences, and events.

The Center's public outreach programs chart a pro-active role, targeting topics of interest to the field. Providing a forum for scholars and reaching out to the lay public are important aspects of the Center’s mission, especially in enhancing overall awareness of the importance of art collections as signposts in American cultural and social history. The Center proposes to develop programs that run the gamut from informal colloquia for advanced scholars to symposia open to the public.

Themes suggested for future symposia and/or lectures include:

  • American collectors of the early nineteenth century
  • Changing notions of display in American collections
  • The role of academies and art associations
  • Artists as patrons
  • Defining portraits as art or genealogy; visual documentation versus fine arts.

Exhibition catalogues from the Frick Art Reference Library's collection as exhibited in Modern Art: The Twentieth Century Art Scene as Documented in the Frick Art Reference Library.
