Interpretive Fellowship

The Frick Collection announces the Interpretive Fellowship, a twelve-month fellowship devoted to the study and practice of gallery teaching in the art museum. Museum professionals and graduate students who have completed a minimum of one year of graduate work in museum studies, art history, or art education are encouraged to apply.

The recipient of the 2011 Interpretive Fellowship will work to develop a broad knowledge of the Collection as well as fluency in issues related to museum pedagogy. Additionally, he or she will carry out teaching responsibilities on behalf of The Frick Collection's Education Department as assigned beginning in August. In recognition of his or her commitment, the fellow will receive a stipend of $25,000 and be reimbursed for travel expenses associated with attending the 2011 Teaching Institute in Museum Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Eligibility

Interpretive Fellowship applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of one year of graduate study, or the equivalent professional experience. Preference will be given to graduate students and postgraduates who have studied art history, museum studies, or museum education and have also held teaching positions in a museum. All candidates must demonstrate a compelling interest in gallery teaching and museum pedagogy and be available to commit four days a week to the fellowship, including evenings and weekends as necessary. Furthermore, The Interpretive Fellow should be prepared to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment alongside a community of museum educators, curators, docents, and school guides.

Application Instructions

Fellowship candidates are asked to submit the following application materials in a single e-mail addressed to Adrienne Lei, Education Programs Coordinator: education@frick.org.

  • A brief cover letter in the e-mail body, with candidate's full contact information
  • A current résumé of education and employment, attached as a PDF
  • A written statement, not to exceed one thousand words, specifying what the applicant hopes to accomplish during the fellowship period and detailing how the Frick’s resources can be used to accomplish these goals, attached as a PDF
  • A list of other concurrent responsibilities and activities, attached as a PDF
  • Two letters of recommendation, one academic and one professional, attached as a PDF or submitted separately by direct e-mail from the recommender

All materials must be received no later than March 25, 2011. No phone calls, please. Finalists will be invited to The Frick Collection for interviews in April. All applicants will be notified by mid-May.
