In 1722 the Meissen factory began impressing its porcelain with a blue
underglazed factory mark to protect the authenticity and reputation
of its production from a growing number of independent painters not
affiliated with the Saxon factory, called Hausmaler (home painter).
Nevertheless, undecorated (and unmarked) Meissen porcelain continued
to reach the market to be decorated in a variety of styles by artists and
workshops in Holland, Bohemia, or elsewhere in Europe. Although
these pieces were often seconds or outdated models, the factory also sent
porcelain to be enameled in Holland or gilded in Augsburg. Indeed, the
Meissen painters' unsuccessful gold decoration led the factory to send
large amounts of white porcelain to Augsburg to be decorated in gold in
the workshop of the brothers Abraham (1689–1747) and Bartholomäus
(1678–1754) Seuter, a few examples of which are shown below.
