Hausmaler

Tall Cup and Saucer, Meissen porcelain, c. 1730–40, Decoration attributed to Hans Gottlieb von Bressler (d. 1777), The Arnhold Collection, photograph: Michael Bodycomb

In 1722 the Meissen factory began impressing its porcelain with a blue underglazed factory mark to protect the authenticity and reputation of its production from a growing number of independent painters not affiliated with the Saxon factory, called Hausmaler (home painter).

Nevertheless, undecorated (and unmarked) Meissen porcelain continued to reach the market to be decorated in a variety of styles by artists and workshops in Holland, Bohemia, or elsewhere in Europe. Although these pieces were often seconds or outdated models, the factory also sent porcelain to be enameled in Holland or gilded in Augsburg. Indeed, the Meissen painters' unsuccessful gold decoration led the factory to send large amounts of white porcelain to Augsburg to be decorated in gold in the workshop of the brothers Abraham (1689–1747) and Bartholomäus (1678–1754) Seuter, a few examples of which are shown below.
