Digital Photoarchive Coordinator

Background
The Frick Art Reference Library, one of the world’s leading centers for research in the history of art, was founded in 1920 by Miss Helen Clay Frick (1888-1984) to further the goals of “encouraging and developing the study of the fine arts and of advancing the general knowledge of ‘kindred subjects’.”  The Library became a division of The Frick Collection in 1987.  The Frick Collection is an art museum consisting of over 1,100 works of art from the 13th to the 19th century, displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Henry Clay Frick. The residence, with its furnishings and works of art, has been open to the public since 1935.  It is one of the world’s most perfect museums.

Summary and Responsibilities
Create cataloging records for new digital file acquisitions and establish authority records for new artists, public collections, and portrait subjects.  Create cataloging records for the Library’s collection of 57,000 original negatives gradually being digitized through grant-funded projects.  Coordinate Photoarchive Department management and planning for grant-funded projects to systematically digitize the collection and oversee project assistant. Coordinate communication, workflow, and outsourcing of photoarchive material to vendor for scanning, including barcoding, database tracking of material, and quality control checking of digitized text files. Participate in selection, training, and supervision of undergraduate interns charged with editing database records and retrieving material from photoarchive files for scanning. Identify new sources of digital image files for collection development. Work with Photoarchive Department team to define and implement digital acquisition policies and help develop a public interface for photoarchive database.  Serve as Photoarchive Department liaison with Conservation Department Digital Lab and Information Systems Department on database and digital image issues. Remain current on developments in best practices for visual resource cataloging and digital image preservation.  Assist Public Services Department with periodic Reference Desk duty.

Qualifications
2-5 years experience cataloging images of works of art. B.A. in Art History required, graduate coursework in art history and/or library information science preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Concern for accuracy and careful attention to detail. Ability to formulate timelines, meets deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively. Some supervisory experience preferred. Familiarity with best practices for visual resources cataloging and digital image capture. Familiarity with computer applications including Photoshop, Filemaker or equivalent, and digital asset management systems.
