The design on this pocket square is adapted from a tortoiseshell and brass detail of the Marquetry-Veneered Barometer Clock, c. 1690–1700. The case of the clock is attributed to André-Charles Boulle (French, 1642–1732), one of the greatest French cabinetmakers of his time. Boulle was appointed Cabinetmaker to the King in 1762 under Louis XIV. The clock is decorated on all sides, indicating that it was most likely intended either as a centerpiece in a room or for display before a mirror.
