The Frick Collection Market Tote

The design on this tote is adapted from a soft-paste porcelain plaque that adorns the lower section of a gilt-bronze tripod table purchased by Henry Clay Frick in 1918. Made around 1783 at the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory in France, the plaque was commissioned by Dominique Daguerre, a renowned French marchand-mercier (merchant of luxury goods), who played an important role in the design of furniture decorated with Sèvres porcelain. The sumptuous painted bouquets of cut flowers include roses, ranunculi, cornflowers, morning glories, and campanulas.
