Know Before You Go

At the Frick, art is presented within the historic rooms of one of New York City’s last great Gilded Age mansions. To preserve this unique domestic atmosphere, we do not use wall labels in the galleries, and photography is permitted only in the Garden Court.

During your visit and beyond, there are many ways to learn about our buildings, history, and works on view, including our free mobile guide and introductory video.

Find out more below and in our FAQs, and make a day of your visit with our shopping and dining experiences. We look forward to welcoming you!

In the Galleries

Why do most artworks not have wall labels?

arrow-right2

The Frick is committed to preserving our unique domestic atmosphere in a former Gilded Age mansion and to fostering an environment of close looking. We encourage visitors to experience our collection first and foremost through visual engagement.

Most works in the permanent collection have small plaques or labels identifying the artist and title. Our special exhibitions generally feature more extensive labels and introductory texts.

How can I learn more about the museum and artworks on view?

arrow-right2

We provide a free mobile guide through Bloomberg Connects, featuring audio commentary by our curators. Enter circled numbers in the galleries or on our map to learn more about a specific work, display, or room.

A printed guide is also available for purchase at the Admissions Desk. Our collection and exhibitions webpages are regularly updated, and our Museum Shop carries many books onsite and online about the Frick’s history and collections, including an up-to-date Essential Guide.

We encourage you to watch our introductory video, Welcome to the Frick!, narrated by Steve Martin. During open hours, this video and others play on a loop in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium, on Floor SC1.

May I take photographs?

arrow-right2

For the safety of our art and visitors, photography is not permitted in the galleries. However, visitors are welcome to take photos in the Garden Court and other public spaces outside the galleries.

We display much of our collection without protective barriers like stanchions and vitrines. Visitors focused on taking a photograph can inadvertently come too close to our art and architecture. The use of flash also poses a risk to light-sensitive works. Our policies help minimize these risks and enable visitors to engage more deeply, free from distractions.

High-quality images of the collection are available on our website, should you wish to revisit or study works in greater depth.

Read our full Photography Policies to learn more. Thank you for helping us protect our art and historic galleries!

What time do the galleries close?

arrow-right2

Last entry to the galleries is 30 minutes before the museum’s closing time. Visitors may stay in the galleries until closure. Security officers will make an announcement 15 minutes before closing time. See more information on museum hours.

What are your security procedures?

arrow-right2

A security officer will inspect your bag upon entry to the building. For more information and a list of prohibited items, see Security Procedures.

We encourage you to leave your permitted items in our free Coat Check, located on Floor C. For the safety of our art and visitors, backpacks within our size guidelines must be either checked or worn on your front in the galleries, and coats must be either checked or worn (not carried).

Do you offer guided tours?

arrow-right2

The Frick offers online and in-person guided visits for schools, colleges, and universities, as well as in-person private tours for other groups. Our museum educators also regularly offer short talks in the galleries: “A Home for Art” (on the history of the house and museum) and “Closer Look” (on individual works on view). See our Programs page for more.

Please note: The Frick does not permit unauthorized lectures, tours, classes, or guided visits led by third parties.

Why aren’t children under the age of 10 admitted to the museum?

arrow-right2

Visitors to the Frick can view works of art—including paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, and textiles—face to face in our historic spaces, largely without protective barriers such as stanchions and vitrines. To minimize the risk of accidental damage, the museum admits children only 10 years of age or older.

We invite younger art enthusiasts to engage with our collections through our mobile guide, videos, virtual tours, coloring pages, and more. We look forward to welcoming them in person when they turn 10!

May I reserve tickets for a group visit?

arrow-right2

Groups of 10 or more people may reserve tickets together, to allow for streamlined entry into the museum. Please request group reservations at least two weeks in advance. See Group Reservations for more information.

Please note that lecturing in the galleries is not permitted.
