The design of this eyeglass case and lens cloth is adapted from the Cylindrical Club-Shaped Vase with Black Ground from the Ch’ing dynasty (1644–1912). The vase is distinguished by a band of banana leaves around the neck and a body covered with large lotus blossoms.

Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) purchased the vase in 1915 from the estate of J. P. Morgan.
