Ingres Sketchbook

Considered one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century, Ingres had many false starts and produced many drawings in preparation for his Comtesse d’Haussonville. At least sixteen of these preparatory drawings survive. According to a letter written by the artist, the finished painting “aroused a storm of approval.”
