Comtesse Tote Bag

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780−1867)

Comtesse d'Haussonville, 1845

The Frick Collection

Louise, Princesse de Broglie (1818–82), granddaughter of Madame de Staël, published a number of books, including a biography of Byron. For her time and her elevated social caste, she was outspokenly independent and liberal. In this portrait, Ingres appears to have surprised her in the intimacy of her boudoir, having just discarded her evening wrap and opera glasses.
