Harmony in Pink and Grey: Portrait of Lady Meux, 1881–82
Susan Langdon (1852–1910) was a woman of humble origins and strong character who spent a period of time on the stage before her marriage to Sir Henry Bruce Meux, Baronet, a brewer. Her theatrical flair is evident in this portrait, one of three Whistler created for her. She collaborated with Whistler to promote her image in society; she is shown in this portrait in an afternoon dress that was at the height of fashion. Henry Clay Frick purchased the painting in 1918.
