Biographical Note

Albert Joseph Moore (1841–1893) was a painter born in York, England to a family of painters. While many of his works are Neoclassical, his earlier work includes portraits as well as paintings that were inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement. There is little scholarship about Moore prior to the twentieth century, although one of his pupils, Alfred Lys Baldry, published a book about him in 1894.

Howard M. “Hap” Stoner (1933–2017) of New York, N.Y., once a senior vice president at advertising agency N.W. Ayer & Son, took an interest during retirement in art history and, more specifically, Albert Moore’s life and work. After auditing a course at Columbia University with Professor Allen Staley, he sought to further educate himself and others on Moore’s work, including traveling internationally to view all of Moore's known works in person. His research files contain evidence of his efforts to locate biographical works on the artist and write some of his own, ultimately culminating in an unpublished manuscript.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of Howard M. Stoner’s research materials related to Albert Moore and the correspondence he maintained with various museum professionals and scholars who had access to or interest in Moore’s work. The collection is organized into two series: Correspondence and Subject Files.

Series I: Correspondence contains copies of emails, handwritten notes, and letters to and from Stoner. There are image requests made to museums and invoices related to these requests, communication with booksellers who had biographical materials related to Albert Moore, letters regarding meetings with scholars with similar interests, communication regarding viewing some of Moore’s works in person, and letters providing evidence that the painting Lilies had been incorrectly titled.

Series II: Subject Files contains copies of scholarship related to Albert Moore, Victorian artists, and the Pre-Raphaelite movement; photographic material including negatives, transparencies, slides, and photographs; gallery catalogs; library catalog records; and handwritten notes. It also includes a copy of Stoner's unpublished manuscript, Some Observations on the Paintings of Albert Moore, 1841-1893.

Collection Inventory

Series I: Correspondence

Contains copies of emails, handwritten notes, and letters to and from Stoner. Correspondence relates to visiting museums and galleries to view Albert Moore's paintings, requesting images, and sharing information with or requesting information from scholars about Albert Moore's life and work.

Of note is correspondence with the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (1998-1999), in which Howard M. Stoner provided evidence from his own research that a painting by Albert Moore had been misdated and mistitled - it was cataloged as Reclining Model, 1873 but ought to have been titled and dated Lilies, 1866. Curator Richard Rand at the Clark Institute agreed with Stoner's conclusion and updated the museum's records. Howard M. Stoner's original folder titles related to this project refer to it as "the Lilies letter."
