Jeffrey Collins: “The Power of Patronage: Valadier and Pope Pius VI"

January 16, 2019

During the late eighteenth century, Luigi Valadier, Rome's most sought-after silversmith, created spectacular objects for Europe's most discerning princes, prelates, and aristocrats. This lecture explores his commissions for Pope Pius VI, a demanding client whose strategic patronage of the arts gave Valadier increased public visibility and stretched his creativity to the limit.
