Director’s Greeting
On December 16, 1935, The Frick Collection opened its doors for the first time, making public one of the country’s finest assemblages of European art, housed in one of New York City’s last great Gilded Age mansions. The New York Times declared the Frick “more than a museum,” and The Art News hailed the opening as “one of the most important events in the history of American collecting and appreciation of art.”
Ninety years later, we honor this legacy at an equally transformative moment for the Frick. Following the renovation and reopening of our Fifth Avenue home, we have been so glad to welcome visitors back to enjoy more of our collections and buildings than ever, including access for the first time to the mansion’s second floor. We have also unveiled beautiful new spaces, such as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium, the Ronald S. Lauder Exhibition Galleries, a warm and welcoming coffee bar, and Westmoreland—our first-ever museum café.
As we embark on this exciting new chapter, we reaffirm our founding as an institution “to which the entire public shall forever have access.” I invite you to celebrate with us by exploring the special content below. We are deeply grateful for your enthusiasm and support. From all of us at the Frick, cheers to ninety years!
